DEVELOPMENT - by Sandra Wolton

DEVELOPMENT

Development as it stands is a complete waste of time. It is a vast industry which feeds off the misfortunes of the poor. Mostly international donors and charities call the shots. In return for funding these organisiations dictate which projects should be run and how they should be structured. There is precious little consultation with the 'recipients' and results, or outcomes mostly fail to improve the quality of life of the poorest.

Development is at a crossroads. In order for development to be effective i.e. to truly lift communities out of poverty the populations have to be involved at every stage. Most importantly far more pressure has to be exerted on governments to fulfill their role and to implement legislation already in place. Priorities must be 100% literacy, eradication of child labour, universal primary education and implementation of a minimum wage.

This is just the start!

Need of Micro finance

A 5000 rupee loan with 24 percent interest doesn’t change the life dramatically. But it has some impact on their life. If this loan is not available they will be taking a loan with 10 percent interest per month if one day is late they get beaten up. Here the micro-finance is their permanent friend and companion .Women can walk in to their micro- finance office finish the formality and get the loan . The women very well know how to calculate their interest and loan repayment schedule.
